Watergate - 670 Words

Very few American’s over the age of 20 do not know about Watergate. They have seen the plots in movies, history books, TV shows, and Made for TV movies. Some of the media plots are real and some not so much. Contrary to popular belief â€Å"Forest Gump† was not the person to crack open Watergate [ (Groom, 1994) ]. That honor goes to a simple security guard at the Watergate Complex, Frank Wills [ (AHC, 2012) ]. Mr. Willis was making his rounds when he became aware of tape covering the locks on the doors to several different stairways. This allowed the doors to close but not lock. Mr. Wills removed the take and went on his way. Later on when Mr. Wills was once again on his rounds, he found that the tape was back. This time Wills called the†¦show more content†¦When asked to turn over the tapes, initially the President refused, his reasoning was that the Constitutional principle of executive privilege extends to the tapes. He also stated that it could compromise National Security [ (Miller Center University of Virginia, 2003) ]. Eventually Nixon relented but after reviewing the tapes there was an 18  ½ minute gap in the recordings. President’s Nixon’s secretary, Rose Mary Woods claimed that while transcribing the tapes she had accidently hit record and recorded over five minutes of the tapes. Nevertheless, she insisted she was not responsible for the additional 12 minutes of lost information. The Notes taken during the time of the lost information showed one of the topics discussed was the arrest at the Watergate Hotel [ (Miller Center University of Virginia, 2003) ]. Nixon was the first to launch an investigation on how the tapes were erased though nothing came of it. The reader feels a great deal Essay A poem in which the narrators feelings are uncovered is Visiting Hour by Norman MacCaig.  The narrator is visiting a dying friend or relative in hospital, and tries to evade his emotions on his way to the ward. When he arrives, he is overcome by grief and anguish, and leaves the visit feeling it has been pointless.  The poem is composed in free verse using a stream of consciousness style and it exposes perplexity in the narrators mind and his feelings. This gains our sympathy as we are placed into the same state of affairs as him. As MacCaig enters the hospital, he feels repulsed by his surroundings and seems to be detached from himself.  The hospital smell  combs my nostril.  This unusual metaphor suggests that the antiseptic, potent smell of the disinfected hospital is so strong that it even reaches beyond the roots of the hairs in his nostrils; it shows his discomfort. It hits the narrator straight away more than anything else. He then goes on to say:  As they go bobbing along. This implies that the nostrils are disembodied from him and they are floating along on their own. It suggests he is detached from the experience and shows he is struggling to cope with the situation. This idea is reinforced in stanza three:  I will not feel, I will not  feel, until  I have to.  The narrator is trying to reassure himself that he is strong enough to deal with the disturbing visit and the repetition creates a worried and tense atmosphere. Until I have to tells the reader that death is inevitable. The staccato rhythm caused by the single syllable words and enjambment in this verse heightens the tension felt by the narrator. This emphasises his finality as well as his confused state of mind. Green and yellow corridors.  The description of the colours of the wall has connotations of disease, infections and vomit. This shows us once again that he is finding the visit discomforting and uneasy.  As the narrator watches the nurses in the hospital, he cant help but think highly of them and considers them to possess an angelic quality:  Nurses walk lightly, swiftly,  here and up and down and there.  This lexical choice deliberately emphasises the way he thinks that they are remarkable as they are so efficient and seem to be everywhere at once due to their tremendous business. Linking the words with and makes these lines have a sort of rhythm; this reinforces the idea of the hospital being so busy. Furthermore, he notices their lean physiques: Their slender waists miraculously  carrying their burden.  He feels that the nurses are so tiny and graceful but they play a massive part in the running of the entire hospital; they may be small but they are the ones who visitors lean on in times of anguish. No outsider could tell just by looking at them what they have gone through.  Their eyes  still clear after  so many farewells.  He is getting closer to his destination, so he talks of pain and farewells which he is anticipating to be the outcome of his visit. He acknowledges that the nurses have experienced a lot in their line of work and respects that they can still remain so composed and brave after all the deaths they have seen whereas he feels he cant bear the sorrow of losing just one relative. Upon his arrival, he states: Ward 7.  The use of the abrupt statement followed by a full stop shows how he stops completely in his tracks. He is finally ready to confront his feelings. The digit seven is more effective than the word because it allows the user to see through MacCaigs eyes. The word choice is excellent because like the withered flower, this woman is dying and her arms as so thin, they are almost stalk-like. The flower imagery also suggests the womans former beauty which the narrator can still see. The reader feels a great deal of sympathy at this point, both for the woman and the narrator who has to endure her physical weakness without being able to do anything to help.  And between her and me  distance shrinks till there is none left  but the distance of pain that neither she nor I  can cross.

They reported being tied up by their hands and feet; some were hit, punched, and even headbutted with guns. In Pakistan, as she was taking notes for a story in a crowd, men beganto grope at her. She responded by shouting at them; when their advances continued, she began punching at hem until she made a scene, and was invited into the car of the Chief of Justice. Barker also reported knowing female correspondents who weren’t â€Å"as lucky† as she. Some have been molested in their hotel rooms and some partialy raped by mobs. Most of the reporters don’t report cases of rape or sexual assualt in fear they won’t be able to cover the stories that they do. CBS Lara Logan came out and publicly announced that she was beaten and sexually assualted by a mob in the Cairo. Her attack was said to be â€Å"a brutal and sustained sexual assualt and beating. This article also stated, that men are also victims of sexual violence, and a few male journalist have reported being sodimized by their captors. Barker also stated, â€Å"Sexual violence has always been a tool of war, females reporters sometimes are just convenient. † These are very dangerous working conditions journalist have been facing while covering stories in foreign war zones. Being that the journalist are the people that are willingly risking their lives to nationally report many important events arcoss the world, they shouldn’t be recieving this kind of treatment when in another country. So in some countries whether you have a gun are not you can still be a target. These are the reasons people feel they way they do. But, I feel that reporters should not be allowed to carry weapons while covering storie in risky working conditions. It puts their lives just that much more at risk, when many reporters have said that it isn’t worth the risk. Armed guards should be assigned to journalist to protect them in the dangerous experiences they face while reporting stories in other countries war zones. Some people oppose this idea just as well as the guns, for some of the same reasons. People fear the presence of an armed guard will present the journalist as a target. The journalist will appear as apart of the war, rather than an innocent bystander. That the citizens in that country will be afraid to talk to the reporters because of the armed guards, and their job won’t get done. They also feel like the armed guards may kill innocent civilians. Now this may have some truth, except the guards killin gthe innocent civilians. The main point is too many journalist are dying in other countries, and they have nothing to do with the violent events that take place. The presence of an armed guard would make it harder for journalist to be beatin or sexually assualted. It would be harder for foreign soldiers to kidnap journalist or to kill journalist, because they would have protection. If protection were required for journalist when covering risky stories, the statistics wouldn’t be as high. Unlike journalist armed guards are trained and can provided sufficient protection against captors and mobs. Journalist are no longer seen as neutral, but apart of the problem. This is why people support the idea of having an armed guard present in dangerous environments. It is clear, journalist are facing life threatening situations and need to be protected when working in risky zones. The high number of journalist who have been attacked, captured, beaten, missing, and killed continues to grow, as these reporters venture into other countries in hopes to cover important stories. Allowing them to carry weapons will increase the attacks, not allowing them to report puts all countries at risk of attack. The presence of an armed guard would protect the journalist from the many tragedies they face while being in other countries. Although many people feel that the idea of an armed guard can make a journalist be seen as a target, it can also be the key in saving many journalist from harsh treatment and death. (1,233)
